I think maybe the thing with this whole BNF crap, is that fandom can be a fairly intimidating place for a newbie. Not necessarily because anyone is doing anything wrong, just because the older, more established writers already have their following, and their close-knit groups/friendships.

I think it takes people a while to find their own niche, and some will give up too early - hence the bitching about BNF's.
